Acoustic renovation in Park Hotel Moscow

Project Overview
Park Hotel Moscow is located next to Boris Garden, one of the greenest areas in Sofia. The hotel offers a peaceful environment for different types of events. One of the key spaces in the hotel is Europe Hall, which has hosted dance events, fashion shows, conferences, and seminars for many years.
In early March, DECIBEL was invited to start work on the renovation of Europe Hall. After several technical discussions and on-site tests, a full acoustic design was developed. The renovation officially began in July. The goal was to preserve the hall’s functional identity while improving its acoustic and visual comfort.
Treating an Event Hall with Controlled Acoustics
Europe Hall had a long history, but its interior and acoustics needed an update. The client wanted to keep the same reverberation time after the renovation. This was important to preserve the original sound characteristics of the space, which were suitable for different event types.
To meet this goal, DECIBEL created a simulation model to calculate the required amount and placement of acoustic panels. The final design included a mix of sound-absorbing and sound-insulating materials, planned to match the existing dimensions and layout of the hall.
Challenge
The main challenge was to modernise the space without changing its acoustic character. The client requested that the reverberation time stay the same after the renovation. Another challenge was to develop a flexible design that would allow future maintenance or panel replacement without structural changes.
There was also a delay due to color selection and material coordination, which required additional time and adjustments during installation.
Scope of Work
- Measurement of existing reverberation time
- Simulation of acoustic model for accurate panel placement
- Supply and installation of:
- WavO acoustic panels
- VISTO 48 dual-component panels
- POLYSOUND soundproofing membrane
- Design of flexible MDF panel structure on walls and columns
- Installation of soundproof door between Europe Hall and Conference Hall 1
- Coordination with subcontractor Dorma for door supply and fitting
Solution
The hall was treated using a combination of high-performance materials. WavO panels were selected for their ability to absorb sound and improve clarity. VISTO 48 panels added extra insulation, while the POLYSOUND membrane was used to prevent sound transmission.
All wall and column panels were mounted using a design that allows easy removal or replacement. This makes future maintenance simple and cost-effective.
A special soundproof door with a 1-meter moving element and a sound insulation index of Rw = 39 dB was installed. This door separates Europe Hall from Conference Hall 1 and prevents sound from transferring between rooms during parallel events.
Result
The renovation of Europe Hall was completed successfully. The reverberation time remained within the required levels. The hall now has improved sound control and a modern, clean look. Despite some delays with color selection, the work was delivered on time and fully met the client's expectations.
Europe Hall is now ready to welcome new guests for events of all kinds, with upgraded comfort and acoustic quality.
