Project Overview

GE Vernova, a global leader in engineered energy solutions, contacted DECIBEL to solve a critical noise issue at their high-voltage testing facility in Stafford, UK. The site designs and tests advanced HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) components, handling voltages up to 800,000 volts.

During testing, the load bank used to dissipate surplus energy produced a high-frequency tone reaching 94 dB(A). The noise reverberated across the factory, affecting both engineers and operations. GE Vernova needed an effective noise control solution that could fit within tight installation clearances of less than 350 mm, without interfering with safety procedures or equipment performance.

Noise Control in High-Voltage Testing Environments

Testing HVDC systems requires precision, safety, and absolute focus. However, excessive background noise can interfere with both communication and the concentration of engineers working near sensitive testing equipment. The project required a solution that would maintain acoustic comfort and safety compliance while allowing the testing process to continue uninterrupted.

Challenge

The main challenge was to design an acoustic enclosure system that could contain high noise levels in an extremely confined space. Installation had to take place under Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) safety procedures, with full compliance with GE Vernova’s site supervision standards. Additionally, the system needed to handle high temperatures generated during load operation, requiring efficient ventilation and heat management.

Scope of Work

  • On-site acoustic assessment of the HVDC testing area
  • Design and manufacture of slim-profile acoustic panels for confined spaces
  • Development of attenuated air intake and exhaust ducts with forced ventilation
  • Construction of a custom working platform for safe installation over the load bank
  • Full installation completed under LOTO safety supervision

Solution

DECIBEL designed, manufactured, and installed a custom acoustic enclosure specifically engineered for confined industrial environments. The system used slim acoustic panels that provided maximum sound attenuation without exceeding space limitations. To maintain airflow and prevent overheating, ventilated ducts with built-in silencers were integrated into the structure.

A purpose-built platform was installed above the load bank to allow safe installation of panels and maintenance access. The entire system was designed to maintain functionality and safety while achieving strong noise reduction performance.

Result

The project achieved a noise reduction of over 20 dB(A), bringing sound levels well below the workplace noise threshold. This improvement ensured a safer and more comfortable environment for GE Vernova’s engineers, with zero disruption to ongoing testing operations. The project demonstrated DECIBEL’s capability to deliver high-performance noise control systems in technically demanding and safety-critical industrial settings.
