Improving Acoustics in a Modern Open Theatre

Project Overview
DECIBEL was selected to provide acoustic treatment for an open theatre located in Burgas, Bulgaria. The treatment was focused on the interior of the theatre, where echo and unwanted reflections were affecting sound clarity during performances.
The space featured a modern design, and the client wanted an acoustic solution that would match the clean look of the hall. To achieve this, the walls were treated with high-performance foam panels developed by DECIBEL.
Why Acoustic Treatment Matters
In performance spaces like open theatres, good acoustics are essential. Without proper treatment, sound bounces off hard surfaces, creating echo and making speech or music difficult to hear clearly.
Acoustic panels help control this problem by reducing reverberation. This improves sound quality for both the audience and performers, creating a more enjoyable experience.
Challenge
The theatre had a modern interior with reflective wall surfaces. These caused sound waves to scatter, leading to poor clarity and acoustic discomfort. The solution needed to control high-frequency reflections while fitting visually into the design of the space.
Scope of Work
- Acoustic treatment of interior theatre walls
- Installation of high-frequency foam sound absorbers
- Use of acoustic foam panels that match the modern room aesthetic
Solution
DECIBEL installed two types of high-frequency absorbers to improve the acoustic conditions inside the theatre:
- Square Raster: A precise mid- and high-frequency absorber, designed for spaces that need controlled clarity without losing sound energy. It reduces harsh reflections and supports a balanced acoustic response.
- Z Panel: A lightweight polyurethane foam panel, optimized for high-frequency absorption. Its surface shape and structure are engineered to improve speech and music clarity in performance environments.
Both panel types were selected for their technical performance and minimal visual footprint. Their installation helped preserve the room’s modern look while delivering the required acoustic correction.
Result
After the installation, the theatre achieved much better sound clarity. Echo and high-frequency reflections were significantly reduced. The hall now supports clear speech and controlled sound, making it suitable for various performances.
The panels blended well into the interior. The project is a good example of combining technical efficiency with visual harmony.
