Project Overview

In a spacious ballroom designed for dance classes and rehearsals, excessive echo was negatively impacting both music clarity and the overall dance experience.

Sound reflections from the hard surfaces of the hall disrupted communication between instructors and dancers and muddied the music, making it difficult to follow rhythm and cues.

DECIBEL was brought in to transform the space acoustically while preserving its open layout and visual appeal.

Challenge

The main issue was the high reverberation time caused by large surface areas and minimal soft finishes.

Echo in a dance hall not only interferes with sound quality but also creates auditory fatigue, making it harder for dancers and teachers to engage fully.

The acoustic treatment had to be visually integrated and allow for unobstructed use of the space.

Scope of Work

  • On-site acoustic analysis of the ballroom’s reverberation and sound behaviour
  • Design of an integrated ceiling and wall acoustic solution
  • Installation of Echo Cloud suspended acoustic panels on the ceiling
  • Addition of wall-mounted Wood Slat acoustic panels for complementary sound absorption and aesthetic cohesion

Solution

DECIBEL addressed the echo issue by installing Echo Cloud suspended acoustic panels across the ceiling.

These panels are engineered to absorb mid- and high-frequency reflections, significantly reducing reverberation in large volumes. To further enhance acoustic clarity, wall-mounted Wood Slat acoustic panels were strategically placed to absorb residual reflections.

These panels also brought visual warmth and character to the otherwise minimalist walls.

Result

The combined ceiling and wall treatment resulted in a marked reduction in echo and an improvement in overall sound clarity. Music now carries clearly, and instructors can communicate effortlessly with dancers.

The acoustic upgrade created a more focused, immersive, and enjoyable environment; one where every tone and movement is experienced with clarity and confidence.

Ballrooms and large dance studios often suffer from uncontrolled sound reflections. This project demonstrates how thoughtful acoustic intervention can dramatically improve sound quality without compromising aesthetics or space usability.
