Project Overview

At the Sofia office of Internovus, employees were experiencing unintended speech transmission between two adjacent rooms—the Team Leader’s office and their team’s workspace—despite a glass partition separating the spaces.

Challenge

Speech was clearly audible between rooms due to sound travelling through the shared ceiling ductwork. The ventilation system, designed to circulate air, was unintentionally acting like a 19th-century voice pipe—carrying sound as well as air.

Scope of Work

DECIBEL’s engineering team investigated the acoustic issue, identified the sound transmission path, and developed a custom solution that balanced both acoustic control and ventilation efficiency.

Solution

To prevent speech intelligibility without compromising airflow, DECIBEL engineered aerodynamic silencers. These were designed to reduce sound transmission through the ductwork while maintaining optimal air circulation with minimal resistance.

Result

The custom silencers eliminated intelligible speech transfer between the rooms while preserving the performance of the HVAC system. The workspace regained its acoustic privacy without sacrificing comfort.

The Problem With Shared Ventilation

In modern office environments, sound doesn’t always respect walls or partitions. One of the most underestimated transmission paths is the ventilation system. This is especially problematic in offices where privacy, focus, or discretion is essential.

Shared HVAC systems are rarely designed with acoustics in mind, which makes them a hidden vulnerability in otherwise well-insulated spaces.

DECIBEL’s solution-driven approach addresses this challenge head-on. By applying precision acoustic engineering, we bring about a tailored balance between technical performance and everyday comfort—quiet, without compromise.
